Test-based Design Methods for Steel Multi-tiered Concentrically Braced Frames

Pablo A. Cano (Ph.D.)

Dr. Imanpour

This project involves steel multi-tiered concentrically braced frames (MT-CBFs), one of the most economical solutions for lateral load resisting systems in tall single-storey buildings. Special seismic design provisions for MT-CBFs have recently been updated in the Canadian and American steel design standard. However, there is a lack of experimental research data on the seismic response of such frames. In this research the seismic response of MT-CBFs will be investigated experimentally to validate detailed numerical models of the frame response and propose improved seismic design requirements. Furthermore, this research will provide practitioners and design engineers with a better understanding of the behaviour of MT-CBFs.
