Design Methods and Modelling Techniques for Steel Multi-Tiered Concentrically Braced Frames considering Base Flexibility

Pablo A. Cano

Ph.D.

Dr. Imanpour

Pablo Cano began his Ph.D. program in January, 2019, shortly after completing his M.Sc. at the University of Alberta. Pablo’s thesis project involves multi-tiered concentrically braced frames (MT-CBFs). Steel MT-CBFs are one of the most economical solutions for lateral load resisting systems of tall single-storey buildings. Special seismic design provisions for MT-CBFs have recently been updated in the Canadian and American steel design standard. However, there is a lack of experimental research data on the seismic response of such frames. In his research the seismic response of MT-CBFs will be investigated experimentally to validate detailed numerical models of the frame response and propose improved seismic design requirements. Furthermore, this research will provide practitioners and design engineers with a better understanding of the behaviour of MT-CBFs.
